The name Kroma is derived from the Greek word “Chroma,” reflecting the project’s mission to create a Layer 2 solution that is vibrant, scalable, and capable of organic operations. On September 7, 2023, Lightscale, a subsidiary of Wemade, launched the Kroma network, an Ethereum Layer 2 that establishes a link between the vast ecosystems of Ethereum and WEMIX. Initially starting as a gaming chain, Kroma plans to expand its offerings to include DeFi, NFTs, and more.
As part of the WEMIX mega-ecosystem strategy, Kroma will serve as a conduit for bringing Ethereum users, holders, and assets into the WEMIX ecosystem.
As the number of services on Layer 1 increases, transaction speeds decline, scalability reaches its limits, and gas fees rise. The widely used Ethereum Layer 1 faces this challenge, known as the blockchain trilemma. Layer 2 solutions address scalability issues.
Kroma offers transaction fees that are ten times lower than those on the Ethereum Mainnet while maintaining Native Ethereum Security. The project aims to develop a universal ZK solution based on the Optimism architecture.
Kroma Genesis marks the first NFT ever released by Kroma, celebrating the launch of the Kroma Mainnet.
In mid-2024, Kroma began minting its own token, KRO. Its tokenomics feature a zero-start distribution mechanism with no pre-mining. A new block is generated every two seconds, and KRO is minted and distributed to users and decentralized applications as rewards. The level of participation is determined by the number of transactions, meaning that decentralized applications and users who generate more transactions will receive more tokens. This rewards system will encourage active engagement in expanding the ecosystem, creating a positive feedback loop.
Twenty-five percent of KRO will be allocated to the fund and the community contributing to the WEMIX ecosystem. Users and dApps will be rewarded with the zero-start distribution token KRO.
In 2024, Kroma underwent significant changes in its shareholder structure, evolving from a subsidiary of Wemade to a company with a broader base of shareholders and partners, centered around its founders and leadership. This transformation will enable Kroma to grow its global business with enhanced support from a diverse range of stakeholders.
