Why Was the Runes Protocol Created?
The development of the Runes Protocol was driven by Casey Rodarmor, the developer of the Ordinals protocol, who was dissatisfied with how the BRC-20 protocol resulted in a large number of “undesirable” UTXOs. As a result, he proposed a token protocol based on the Bitcoin UTXO model. Unlike RGB and Taproot, which require infrastructure for storing and searching off-chain data, or BRC-20, which creates «garbage UTXOs» that take up space in BTC, the design concept of the Runes Protocol addresses user convenience and avoids occupying space in Bitcoin network blocks.

BRC-20 tokens undoubtedly brought a new dynamic to the Bitcoin protocol and have been hugely successful. The market value of tokens such as PEPE and ORDI exceeded $1 billion in just two months. This innovation represented a significant breakthrough by simplifying the creation and transfer of NFT tokens on the Bitcoin network using the Ordinals protocol. However, despite this progress, these tokens also paved the way for various phenomena (NFTs, meme coins) that are currently cluttering the network. However, there is hope that Casey Rodarmor, the architect of Ordinals, has proposed a solution to this problem in the form of the Runes Protocol.
Casey Rodarmor identified the main problem inherent in the BRC-20 protocol: the excessive proliferation of UTXOs (unspent transaction outputs) in the Bitcoin network. These UTXOs, which are residual balances in wallets after transactions, are crucial for recording future transactions in the UTXO database. Unfortunately, the proliferation of BRC-20 tokens leads to unnecessary overload and increases the network’s size.
In response to this problem, Rodarmor proposed Runes as an alternative based on UTXOs, aimed at reducing clutter and smoothly integrating into the Bitcoin ecosystem. In his blog, he explained in detail how UTXO-based protocols align with the fundamental principles of Bitcoin, thereby contributing to responsible network management, limiting the creation of unnecessary UTXOs, and consequently enhancing the blockchain’s resilience.
UTXOs – The Foundation of the Bitcoin Network
UTXOs are the cornerstone of the Bitcoin blockchain, ensuring transaction reliability and preventing double spending. Each operation in the network relies on previous UTXOs as sources and generates new UTXOs as destinations.
This architecture provides numerous advantages, including simplifying transaction verification, enabling parallel processing for optimal scalability, and increasing transparency of coin ownership.
However, the UTXO model also creates problems, including exponential growth in network size and increased storage and bandwidth requirements. Rodarmor emphasizes the need to limit the generation of unnecessary UTXOs to overcome these issues.
Rodarmor’s View on NFTs
While Rodarmor doesn’t seem particularly sympathetic to NFTs and meme coins, he recognizes the potential value of a well-thought-out token protocol like Runes, which can strengthen Bitcoin.
«Creating a good protocol for fungible tokens on Bitcoin could generate significant transaction fee revenue as well as attract developers and users», the developer says.
This viewpoint is shared by other industry representatives. Trevor Owens, co-host of the Ordinals Show, sees tremendous potential in Runes. He has even offered a $100,000 reward to anyone who can develop a working application based on Runes.
Casey Rodarmor’s protocol paves the way for the future of the Bitcoin blockchain, which is currently overloaded. By offering a reliable solution, it addresses the disproportionate proliferation of NFTs and meme coins. For Rodarmor, BRC-20 tokens are «garbage» that unnecessarily clutter the Bitcoin mempool. He believes that these tokens only saturate the network without providing added value. In contrast, he sees Runes as an opportunity to increase the value of the Bitcoin network while reasonably rewarding miners.
One of Rodarmor’s main arguments in favor of Runes is the more responsible management of UTXOs. Unlike BRC-20, which is not based on UTXOs and is considered complex, Runes works by assigning token balances in the form of UTXOs. This approach has the potential to increase miners’ revenue and enhance the value of the Bitcoin network.

How the Protocol Works
The Runes Protocol utilizes OP_RETURN to record protocol messages in the transaction output data. If a rune is entered incorrectly, the token will be destroyed, paving the way for future updates. This method of operation can provide greater flexibility and security compared to BRC-20.

Preemptive symbol usage: The lack of a mechanism to prevent preemptive symbol occupation may result in early users occupying short and valuable symbols.
No transparent minting: The Runes protocol does not offer a transparent minting feature similar to the one found in the BRC-20 standard, meaning users cannot perform minting.
An Uncertain but Promising Future
It is still too early to determine whether Runes will become an opportunity for financial gain. However, if the protocol can address some of the issues associated with BRC-20 and enhance the value of the Bitcoin network, it may attract investors and users. The funding proposed by Rodarmor can also serve as a catalyst to accelerate the development and implementation of Runes.
